A woman posing as if she is about to be burned at the stake. Perhaps she feels it is her destiny. It is a poignant picture. One can only guess what her inner conflicts are that find this pose as their expression.
Of all the ways for punishing a woman, perhaps none combine such an accentuation of her femininity while still allowing her to retain her dignity.
What has led her to this moment? Perhaps she feels she has done something to deserve this punishment. The scar on the stake may be a symbol of the man whom she hurt, wounding him on the very sceptre that is his maculine pride. Thus, perhaps she feels a need to atone in like fashion. She wears a dress, not only to emphasize that she is female, but possibly to allow the flames rising from below to slide up between her legs and hurt her in the same place on her body where she hurt him.
She awaits her ordeal then. Her punishment is designed to touch her most harshly where a woman is most sensitive.
